Mary Virginia Mebane
1939-2024
Mary Virginia Mebane, 85, of Buena Vista, passed away on Thursday, September 12, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 15, at Bruceton First Baptist church with Wayne Purcell and Brett Mebane officiating. Burial followed at Prospect Cemetery.
Mary was born on August 29, 1939, in Henning, Tenn. to the late Franklin Bates Sullivan and Margaret Elizabeth Faulk Sullivan. She was a member of Bruceton First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and singing in the choir for many years. She devoted her life to education. She taught for many years fourth grade at Hollow-Rock Bruceton Special school district. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, playing piano, going to the beach and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry P. Scott IV, her second husband, Howell Dewayne Mebane, and her son Howell Dewayne “Hal” Mebane Jr.
She is survived by her four daughters, Terry Mebane Haynes, Melissa (Mark) Totty, Amy (Wayne) Dawson, Kippy (Dale) Alberts; two sisters, Jenny Crihfield, Bettye (Mike) Haynes; one brother, William Frank (Mary Alice) Sullivan; five grandchildren, Evan (Samantha) Totty, Hannah Alexander, Michael Totty, Abbey Goings, and Gabrille Mincone; and one great grandchild, Owen Crooks Totty.
Her pallbearers were Mark Totty, Wayne Dawson, Dale Alberts, Lance Davis, John Sullivan, and Jeff Mebane.
