Commissioners elect Lana Suite as District 2 commissioner

The Carroll County Legislative Body filled two positions during the Monday night while meeting at the Carroll County Civic Center due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.

Lana Suite of McLemoresville was chosen to fill The District 2 position from which Bobby Argo recently resigned.

She has been employed by Younger & Associates of Jackson for 24 years director of research.

“I work in support of economic development groups like chambers of commerce, cities, counties and industrial boards,” she said.

She was born and raised in Carroll County and is currently serving her first term on the McLemoresville board.

She is also a Certified Municipal Finance Officer.

“I am honored to be appointed to serve the people of my area,” she said.

She was elected by acclamation after being  nominated by commissioner Ronnie Murphy.

Randy Kelly of Bruceton was elected in a 9 to 8 vote over Ronnie Webb of Hollow Rock for the District 2 Carroll County School Board seat. The former District 2 seat was held by Tonya Stepp who did not run in the August 6 election. One commissioner passed.

Kelly is the SRO officer at the Hollow Rock-Bruceton School.

Commissioner John Mann nominated Kelly and Commissioner Hal Eason nominated Webb.

County Mayor Joseph Butler passed out information that told of the reopening plan for the Office on Aging which he said had not been open in several months due to COVID 19.

Since Veterans Day is Wednesday he recognized the commissioners who have served in the military. Each one stood and told what branch device in which they served. At the conclusion, they were applauded.

Commissioner Mann served in the Army. Commissioner Murphy was in the Army and National Guard. Commissioner Gerald Scarborough was a member of the Army and National Guard and Commissioner Steve Parker was in the Air Force.

In other business, commissioners passed the following resolutions:

• A resolution to transfer $350 from the fund balance account into the Veteran Services account to cover a new computer tower for the Veteran Services Office.

• A resolution to transfer $1,000 from a reserve account to the Register of Deeds Office to fund the cost of replacing a workstation computer and new credit card machines.

• A resolution to amend the 2020-21 General Purpose School Fund budget to account for $359,922 in additional federal funding through the state and $359,922 in unbudgeted expenditures for vocational instruction equipment.

• A resolution to use $420,300 in federal Coronavirus Relief Funds received through the state to go towards emergency communication equipment and payroll reimbursement for county employees substantially involved in COVID-19 mitigation.
